Police Lieutenant

Eastern Illinois University in Charleston is seeking candidates for a University Police Lieutenant position. Minimum qualifications include: a Bachelor’s Degree or 120 semester hours credit granted by an accredited institution of higher education, preferably in police science, law enforcement, or other police or law curriculum and four (4) years of full-time experience as a police officer with a federal, state, county, college or university, municipal, or public institutional police organization having a recognized merit system, with at least one (1) year of supervisory experience in the field.

Employees in positions allocated to this level are responsible for assisting in the overall management of police activities and personnel. They work under general direction from higher level personnel.

An EIU Police Lieutenant safeguards lives and property, enforces applicable laws and regulations, and promotes positive university/community relations.  The typical duties include:  foot/bike/vehicle patrol, investigate incidents, make arrests, conduct investigations as required, and submit reports to supervisors, direct traffic and enforce parking and traffic rules and regulations; investigate and report obstructions and faulty utility services or unusual conditions that might endanger the public safety; assist local police agencies during emergencies. The lieutenant will also manage and supervise the activities of designated personnel; organize and structure work; participate in the hiring and promotional process; insure the proper appearance, performance of duty, and conduct of all subordinates; develop and maintain employee performance records and recommend disciplinary action when necessary; conduct disciplinary investigations of infractions, performance, and complaints; assume responsibility for meeting institutional public safety requirements by maintaining effective work performance and workforce utilization; develop and implement operational policies and procedures;  represent the department to the public and other governmental and private agencies; provide effective response to emergency public safety needs; oversee the security for special events (e.g., athletic events, graduations, concerts, or protests); write police and administrative reports; assist with development of the departmental budget and fiscal management of the agency; perform all duties normally required in the lower levels of the Police Officer series as necessary; perform other related duties as assigned.

Candidates will also be required to pass a Civil Service Examination. Minimum pay is $3,795/month, and salary shall be commensurate with experience.
